Creativity Technique
A true NLP practitioner is very careful in his change work when dealing with himself and others. He always considers possible consequences of his actions in both positive and negative terms in advance. We can learn a lot from this approach, which we call Ecology Check.
Exercise for this week
When you look around, most of what you see is likely a product of human creativity in some way: books, furniture, computers, etc.
Creativity is generally seen as something individual, as a talent. We usually learn creative skills alone, in our own way. Creative people are largely unaware of the strategies they use to create something. NLP provides a lot of tools to help you improve and expand your creativity.
Discover your own micro and macro levels of creativity. The micro aspect concerns your thoughts and experiences, which form the basis of your creativity. The macro aspect deals with your interaction with other people – individuals or groups.
The number of possible connections in your brain exceeds the number of particles in the universe. Are you utilizing this potential? Targeted lateral thinking helps you solve problems and achieve goals. Moreover, it is healthy and fun.
Task: "What can I do with the materials currently available to me to create something new within five to ten minutes?"
Use whatever is nearby and take five to ten minutes to create any structure. Then examine what patterns, strategies, principles, and mental processes you employed.
Questions for Self-Reflection
- How did you decide what you wanted to do? Was it more of a random process or did you think about it?
- How did you know you were finished? Were you satisfied with the result?
- How exactly did you proceed with the creation? Did you just start changing something, or did you have a clear idea of the outcome?
This exercise is about getting a first general overview. You should take a closer look at your own creativity process.

Metaphor of the Week
The Statue of Michelangelo
One day, Michelangelo was commissioned by a wealthy family to create a statue of extraordinary beauty. He then searched for a suitable block of marble. After a long time, he found a nearly completely overgrown block in a side street that had been forgotten. Michelangelo had this block of marble brought to his studio by his workers.
He then began to carve the statue of David from the stone. It took him two whole years. And it took another two years to finish the statue by sanding and polishing it.
When the statue was ceremoniously unveiled, many people had come to admire the incomparable beauty of David. Michelangelo was asked how he had managed to create such a beautiful statue.
The sculptor replied: "David was always there. I just had to remove the excess marble around him."
