What is meant by NLP?

NLP is a language and change model with which (techniques) you can shape your life in a more positive, self-determined, and successful way. You can compare NLP to a toolbox; for this reason, it is also considered "dangerous" because, like a toolbox, NLP includes several tools (techniques), such as a hammer or a knife. These tools can either be used to improve a state or can also be misused for other purposes. You alone decide how you use NLP for yourself once you master it. The fact is, however: No matter how you use it, it remains a powerful psychological tool.

Applying NLP in everyday life

NLP can be applied wherever communication takes place and personal potential is to be developed. For example:


  • In sales, in consulting, in training, in personnel development, in corporate functions, etc.
  • In Healthcare
  • In sports
  • In education
  • In personal development
  • In promoting one's own mental and physical posture
  • In hobbies and much more

5 powerful NLP techniques

NLP offers effective methods in various application areas. They serve to improve communication and the respective areas of life. All techniques are fundamentally effective; you just have to know how to implement them. Apply the techniques in everyday life and improve your perception.

  1. Rapport

    Have you ever had a conversation with someone where you felt really good? You felt understood and you were on the same wavelength. When that happens, it is referred to as Rapport (Rapport = Similarity). You can establish rapport between you and your conversation partner to create sympathy and trust. This can also increase willingness to buy or make it easier to negotiate a discount.

    The ability to establish rapport with others is very important not only in sales, but also in communication, discussions, and conflict resolution. You will reach your goal fastest if you build rapport first.

    To successfully establish rapport with another person, two more NLP methods are required: the so-called “Pacing” and “Leading” .

  2. Anchoring

    The term “Anchoring” refers to a stimulus (trigger, stimulus, trigger) that causes a specific, always the same reaction in a person. This means that we unconsciously set anchors in some situations by associating a feeling (happy/sad, anxious/brave, etc.) with a situation. Both positive and negative feelings can be anchored. To avoid becoming a victim of negative associations, we can use the powerful NLP technique of anchoring for ourselves. How exactly that works, you can read here.

    Exercise: Put yourself in a situation where you laughed a lot. Notice the feeling of amusement and set an anchor just before the peak of your feeling – for example, clench your hand into a fist and press firmly three times. Then briefly distract yourself and test the anchor again by pressing your palms together. Now you should feel amused again.

  3. Representational Systems: VAKOG

    Humans experience the world through their senses. In NLP, we distinguish five different representational systems:

    • Visual (seeing/eyes)
    • Auditory (hearing/ears)
    • Kinaesthetic (feeling/skin)
    • Olfactory (smelling/nose)
    • Gustatory (tasting/tongue)

    Every person tends to be stronger or weaker in certain perceptions, so people can be typified (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, olfactory, gustatory). If you know what type your conversation partner is, you can establish rapport even more easily and quickly.

  4. Swish Technique

    With the Swish Technique you can dissolve or change bad habits and build strong motivation. This involves images that we project in our mind's eye.

    Exercise: Imagine an image of your unwanted behavior (e.g., nail-biting) and additionally create a target image of how you wish it to be instead. Then you swap both images using the SWISH TECHNIQUE .

  5. Meta-Model

    With the Meta-Model, you can become a communication champion: When speaking, deletions, generalizations, and distortions are often used, which can lead to statements being misinterpreted and conflicts arising.

    With the Meta-Model, you delve into the deep structure of what has been said, clarify ambiguities, and avoid misunderstandings.
