If we do not learn a lesson, we are presented with it again... and again! Once we have learned the lesson, we move on to the next one.

Hierarchy of Values

Values include, for example, security, love, honesty, honor, loyalty, reliability, responsibility, etc. They underpin our behaviors and are inner motivators. Every person uses their personal values to move towards their goals and outcomes. The feeling of personal satisfaction and wholeness results from a match between current behavior and personal values. The people you love or are friends with, the way you raise children or would raise them, the political direction you support, how you perform your work, the clothes you wear, the food you consume, are determined by the individual values you claim for yourself.

Exercise for this week

With the help of the following approach, I would like to give you a way to explore your values more closely and thus illuminate the motivation behind your actions.

  • What is important to you in life? Gather what comes to mind regarding this question.
  • What projects, plans, endeavors, leisure activities have you pursued in recent years?

For each individual answer, consider the following questions:

  • Why are you doing this?
  • What do you gain from it?
  • What is the purpose of doing this?
  • What do you give yourself by doing this?

If you now have a list of important values, rank them.

Example:

The values could be: passion, imagination, freedom, development, adventure, success, and health.

Now I ask myself which value is more important to me. Is passion or imagination more important to me? Passion. Is passion more important than freedom? Yes. What is more important: passion or development? ...

So I compare all values in turn with passion. If there is no value that is more important than passion, then passion comes first. If there is a value that is more important, it is prioritized and compared with all others. So, for example, if success were more important than passion, then success would be number 1. Of course, I no longer need to compare success with imagination, because imagination was less important than passion, and passion was in turn less important than success.

After you have established the hierarchy of your values, go through your list again and explore what these values mean to you.

Ask yourself: What does love/success/passion .... mean to me?

By knowing your values and their hierarchy, you can now compare your goals with your values. Through this comparison, you can define your goals more precisely (and possibly formulate new goals), but also put your value concepts to the test. If your values support your behavior and your goals, you can succeed in permanently changing your life.

Metaphor of the Week
The Miser

A very miserly man used to hide his gold under a tree in his garden. Every week he would go to the tree, dig up the gold, and look at it for hours.

One day, however, he found only an empty hole.

The man cried out in sorrow so loudly that the neighbors came running to see what had happened. When they learned what had happened to the man, one asked, "Did you ever use the gold for anything?"

"No," cried the miser, "I just looked at it once a week."

"Then," said the neighbor, "if you never needed the money, you might as well come every week and look at the hole."
