Ecology Check
You are certainly familiar with the concept of ecology from other contexts. What exactly it has to do with individuals and their living conditions will be explained in more detail below.
The term Ecology was adopted in NLP from systemic family therapy and systems theory. It refers to – as it does there – the integrity and wholeness of a system as a whole. In NLP, one speaks of the ecology of a person. Here, a person with their many parts is considered a system. It is about the personal ecology. Furthermore, a distinction is made between the ecology of an interpersonal system (e.g., family, organization, or institution) and the ecology of a situation (e.g., professional or financial situation). Ecology is a central principle in NLP, as changes in one area of life often have effects on other areas of life.
The examination of individual goals and behaviors for their impact on other contexts and larger systems – such as family, work, politics, or environment – is referred to as Ecology Check. NLP offers, in contrast to many of its predecessors (Gestalt, family, hypnotherapy, etc.), explicit instructions for this. These serve as perception filters, with which the coach or therapist can check whether the effects of their own actions are ecological for the client. This examination is called in NLP the Eco-Check.
An Eco-Check can be carried out in various ways. An important method is to pay attention to incongruences during a change technique. Incongruences are inner objections or messages from parts of the unconscious, that signal resistance. The goal of an ecological check is to recognize, acknowledge, and constructively use these objections. The principle of such processes can be found, for example, in the Six-Step Reframing.
An ecological check is a systematic component of any goal work in NLP. Here, the consequences of a goal are viewed from different perception positions: from the second position (perspective of other people) and from the third position (view of the entire system). The Eco-Check also clarifies whether other people represent resources for the desired goal or rather hinder it. If concerns arise, the goal should be adjusted until all objections are adequately considered.
