Strategies

Strategies are the ways in which we organize our thoughts and behavior to accomplish a task. There are so-called macro and micro strategies. If the task one has set for oneself, for example, is to become a successful sociologist, then the macro strategy would be the gradual development of this career (studies, doctorate, publications…). In the next lesson, we will learn about Walt Disney's famous creativity strategy.

This lesson is about a mini crash course in micro strategies. A detailed treatment of the topic would take several days. Micro strategies consist of a sequence of perception channels. Let's consider the shopping strategy of someone who wants to buy a new car as an example. He might first want to look at the car. Perhaps he then wants to hear more detailed information from the seller and then relies on his feelings to make a decision. In this purchasing process, he goes through the perception systems one after the other: Visual (wanting to look), then Auditory (wanting to hear detailed information), and finally Kinesthetic (feeling). What can the seller do with this information? He could pace this exact strategy, i.e., first draw the customer's attention to the visual impression, then tell him something about the product, and finally ask him to make a decision based on his feelings. The customer finds this great because it exactly matches his natural buying strategy.

Exercise for this week

Determine the strategy of the following customer who wants to buy a ballpoint pen:

Customer: First, the weight is important to me and how it feels in my hand. Then, of course, I need precise information about what the ballpoint pen can do and how I can use it. Now the appearance comes into play – I also want it to be representative and attractive for me.

Metaphor of the Week

The child's questions
The child came to his father and sat on his lap.
“Daddy, how does the television work?” “I don’t know.” “Daddy, where does the electricity come from?” “I don’t know.” “Daddy, why does the grass grow?” “I don’t know.” “Daddy, does it bother you if I ask all these questions?” “Of course not, my child. How are you supposed to learn anything if you don’t ask questions!””
