Time-Line (Time Line / inner and outer temporal representation)
Definition
The Timeline in NLP is a metaphorical and visual representation of the flow of time. It shows how people spatially and cognitively represent their past, present, and future. It distinguishes between two forms:
- Outer Time Line: An outwardly projected representation of inner time perception, often in the form of a Ground Timeline. On this line, points for the past, present, and future are marked. By walking this line, people can consciously experience, analyze, or transform experiences (associated or dissociated).
- Inner Time Line: A cognitive representation that shows how a person internally arranges temporal events – often in the form of a mental line that runs in relation to their own body. Events appear, for example, in front of, behind, to the left, or to the right of the person, depending on individual perception.
Origin and Theoretical Background
The concept of Timeline is based on the assumption that people experience time through internal visual representations . These are usually unconscious but can be made conscious through targeted questions and exercises in NLP. Richard Bandler composure John Grinder laid the theoretical foundation, while Lucas Derks composure Tad James the model was further developed towards Timeline Therapy and Social Panoramas . Also in psychology – especially in cognitive behavioral therapy and trauma work – the principle of inner time representation is used.
Application Examples
- Outer Time Line: A ground time line is used to examine and positively reinterpret a past traumatic experience.
- Inner Time Line: A coach asks: "Where in your inner space does your future goal appear?" Goal: To identify the position of the goal in the inner representation and link it with positive resources.
- Coaching: Working with an "is time line" (current situation) and a "should time line" (desired future), to develop a clear life perspective.
Areas of Application
- Therapy: Processing traumas, phobias, and distressing memories by changing time perception.
- Coaching: Support in goal definition and integration of positive future images.
- Communication: Understanding temporal references in conversations and decision-making processes.
- Personal Development: Promotion of self-perception and expansion of time perspective.
Methods and Exercises
- Ground Time Line: Lay a line on the ground that represents the past, present, and future. Walk the line and experience events from different perspectives – associated (in the situation) or dissociated (viewed from the outside).
- Exploring the Inner Time Line:
Ask questions like:
- "Where do you see your goal in the future?"
- "Where is a past event located in your inner space?"
- Time Line Modification: Change submodalities (e.g., colors, brightness, position, or distance) on the time line, to alter the emotional impact of past or future events.
Synonyms or Related Terms
- Temporal Representation
- Time perspective
- Cognitive Time Line
Distinction
The outer time line is a physical projection of the inner time line and is mainly used for practical coaching or therapy exercises. The inner time line is a mental, unconscious representation, that is made accessible in the work through visualization and awareness.
Scientific or Practical Benefit
- Individually: Supports conscious reflection on past experiences and clear visualization of future goals.
- Practically: Provides a systematic tool to work with temporal experiences.
- Scientifically: Based on theories of time perception, cognition, and neuropsychology, which examine the influence of temporal representations on behavior and emotions.
Criticism or Limitations
- Abstraction: Not all people can easily represent time visually or spatially.
- Subjectivity: The perception and alteration of the time-line is individual and requires precise guidance.

Metaphor or Analogy
The time-line is like a river:
It flows steadily in one direction – yet you decide whether to dive into the past, experience the present, or head towards the future. Every curve tells a story, and you have the opportunity to consciously shape the course of this river.
