Perhaps the most fulfilling and thus the most complete life is the one that moves in the interplay of the greatest possible opposites.

The Logical Levels (2)

After you have learned about the Logical Levels in the last lesson and gained initial experiences with them, here comes an exercise that allows you to build a strong motivation for a goal by becoming aware of how achieving the goal influences all levels of your personality.

Exercise for this week

Goal Setting through the Logical Levels (according to Robert Dilts)

Part A: Leading the Goal State through the Logical Levels (LE)

First, conduct a brief goal setting according to the known criteria (positive, self-referential, contextualized, sensory-specific, ecological). These are the NLP well-formedness criteria that we covered in Lesson 10. You can look it up here: » Lesson 10

From now on, maintain the 'as-if' frame for the entire exercise: Assuming you have already achieved your goal now... and go through all the LE levels in this state. Write each term on a piece of paper and place these papers in order on the floor in front of you. Start with the Environment level and proceed step by step from there.

If it becomes apparent on one or more levels that resources are still missing, first go to the next higher level and find the resources that were still missing on the previous level. Otherwise, just note the level where something is still missing for later.

Possible questions at the different levels:

Environment: Where are you here? Who are you with here? What do you hear? What do you see? What do you taste? What do you smell?

Behavior: What are you doing here?

Skills: How do you do what you do? How do you relate to others here? What special abilities do you have here?

Beliefs and Values: What is important to you here? Why do you do what you do? What do you believe here? What motivates you? What do you believe about yourself, others, your job, etc.?

Identity: What kind of self-understanding do you have here? How do you understand yourself, who are you?

Belonging: Where do you belong? Is there something or someone or a group here on the professional, private, idealistic, spiritual level that you know you belong to? What task, what mission do you have?

Now take another step further:

Your unconscious will provide you with another important piece of information at this point. It can be an idea, an image, a symbol, a feeling, or whatever. It is a special gift from your unconscious to you, for your goal. Take as much time as you need to fully absorb it.

Part B: Gathering Resources

Now retrace your steps and recall all the insights and resources you have already found on this path. Experience how each level has been enriched and intensified by the knowledge and your experience of the others. Notice the changes.

If something is still missing at any level, go into dissociation and provide resources from here (send them or set a resource anchor). Go back to the relevant level and experience the change that has now occurred with the resources.

Continue to the Environment level and recall your goal. Experience how your goal has become richer now compared to the beginning.

Part C: Internalization and Conclusion

Now go through all levels once again at your own pace. Take the time you need for this.

Now quickly go through all the levels from top to bottom without thinking. Return to the starting position and notice how your goal has become richer now.

Future Pace: When will you take the first steps towards the complete realization of your goal?

Metaphor of the Week
The Ascetic

Once upon a time, there was an ascetic. He had been meditating in his cave for many weeks.

Then a little mouse came by and began to gnaw at the ascetic's shoe.

The ascetic slowly became annoyed and broke out of his meditation: 'Why are you disturbing me, mouse?'

'I am hungry,' said the mouse.

'You stupid mouse! I am seeking unity with God and you disturb me because of your hunger. Go away!'

Then the mouse asked: 'How do you want to unite with God if you cannot even agree with me?'

Book Recommendation

Solaluna. The Story of Us Little Gods (Audiobook)
Author: Aleksandra Liebe

Short Description:
I often read this book in my seminars. It was written by a friend who is an NLP trainer and contains a small story, in which a number of NLP presuppositions and methods are woven in. The story encourages reflection on one's own life and model of the world. Also as a gift, this book is one of the best-selling books in our small mail-order bookstore.
