Identity

Who am I? Surely you have often thought about this question. This question addresses our identity – the self-understanding of ourselves and our lives. What do you believe about yourself? What are your deepest core values, what is your purpose or mission in this life? This is what this lesson is about. Please work through the following two exercises very thoroughly. They can provide you with much insight about yourself.

Exercise for this week

1. The Obituary

Imagine you have died and a short obituary is to be written about you. A neutral person, who has been a silent companion of yours throughout your life, takes on this task. Try to distance yourself a bit from your own opinion. The person writing this text does not know your true thoughts or feelings unless you have communicated or lived them in some form. They know you from your actions and stories. Have this exercise actually performed by another person and compare it with your own assessment. Also create an obituary as you would like it to be. What would it say if you had realized your life dream? Where does the current state differ from the desired state?

2. The Tombstone

In the second exercise, you are tasked with drafting a text for your tombstone. Please note that it takes a lot of work and effort to chisel something in stone. Therefore, be brief and consider each word carefully.

How did you feel about the last two exercises? Do you feel that you do not want to change much in your life? Or would you prefer to start all over again? Both are good and can guide you in developing your vision!

Metaphor of the Week

About Life and Death

Perhaps the following question is one of the most important of all: How should we live in the face of death?
A great Zen master tells the following parable:

A man was hiking through the dense jungle. Suddenly, a tiger jumped out of the bushes. The man ran away, but the wild animal followed him. The man ran and ran. He came to a cliff. In his despair, he grabbed a wild vine and jumped over the edge. Now he was hanging from the vine, full of fear. Below him, he could also see a second tiger, growling up at him and just waiting to eat him. Above him stood the other tiger, glaring at him with yellow eyes. The vine gave a little, and the man could see that it was about to break.
Then his gaze fell on a juicy grape right in front of his nose. While he held on with one hand, he picked a grape and put it in his mouth.
How delicious it tasted!
