Always look on the bright side of everything – and if it doesn't have a bright side, then rub the dark one until it shines.

Reframing (2)
In the last lesson, we dealt with viewing problems as challenges that life presents to help us grow. This week, we will focus on the assumptions of reframing. The following assumptions are made:
- Every behavior makes sense in some context
- Every behavior is attributed a meaning
- Behind every behavior lies a positive intention
Exercise for this week
Construct meanings and contexts for the following events:
Example:
The partner leaves their clothes on the floor.
Possible meanings:
a) She is a slut.
b) My partner is at home and maybe she is even naked.
Your practice sentences:
- Your partner comes home late from work.
- The doctor approached her.
- Tears were in her eyes.
- We no longer have this brand of jam.
In another exercise, you can also give terms a new meaning:
e.g. illness = signal to allow oneself more rest, to take a break, to receive attention from others.
Try to give the following terms a new meaning according to the examples:
- Mistake
- Rejection
- Divorce

Metaphor of the Week
The farmer and the horse
(Excerpt from the book 'Reframing' by Bandler/Grinder)
A very old Chinese Tao story tells of a farmer in a poor village community. He was considered well-off because he owned a horse, which he used for plowing and transporting loads. One day, his horse ran away. All his neighbors exclaimed how terrible that was, but the farmer simply said: 'Maybe.' A few days later, the horse returned and brought two wild horses with it. The neighbors were all happy about his good fortune, but the farmer just said: 'Maybe.' The next day, the farmer's son tried to ride one of the wild horses; the horse threw him off and he broke his leg. The neighbors all expressed their sympathy for this misfortune, but the farmer again said: 'Maybe.' The following week, recruitment officers came to the village to draft young men into the army. They did not want the farmer's son because his leg was broken. When the neighbors told him how lucky he was, the farmer replied: 'Maybe.'
