Henry Ford
Eye movement patterns
Our topic over the last few weeks has been perception.
After we have already dealt with the perception channels VAKOG in the last two lessons, this time it is about how we can recognize from eye movements which channel the other person is currently in.
Short, unconscious movements of the eyes in different directions provide clues about which representation system information is currently being retrieved from. This can help you better attune to your counterpart and use the same channels. The following describes in which direction the eyes move when you observe your counterpart.
For example, if he imagines things he has never seen before, his eyes move up to the right (visually constructed).
If he remembers something he has seen before, his eyes move up to the left (visually remembered).
His eyes move to ear level on the right when he is internally constructing something auditory — e.g., when he is internally composing something that is new to him.
If he remembers sounds, voices, or noises, his eyes move to ear level on the left (auditory remembered).
If your practice partner perceives sensations or experiences emotions or feelings, the eyes move down to the right (kinesthetic).
If he listens to his inner voice or has self-talk, his eyes wander down to the left (inner dialogue).
Exercise for this week
Exercise 1:
It would be nice if you had a partner for this. Try to pay attention to the position of their eyes while you ask them the following questions:
a) Imagine a purple cow
b) What color was your first car?
c) Which voice that you know is the most unpleasant for you?
d) What would it sound like if an entire football stadium sang your name?
e) Imagine how hot sand on the beach feels.
f) What does a lemon taste like?
g) How does the alphabet continue after O?
Can you assign these questions to the patterns described above (visually constructed, visually remembered, auditory constructed, etc.)?
If it doesn't work right away, remember that this pattern is a generalization that does not always apply. Therefore, it is advisable to calibrate beforehand! For left-handed people, the sides may be reversed.
Exercise 2:
Pay attention to your own eye movements in the coming week. Do you find it easier when you consciously look in the direction that the eye model suggests gives you easier access?
Example:
You would like to visualize something. Look up for this and pay attention to whether you can visualize more easily in this position than when your eyes are directed downwards.
Try out more examples of this kind.

Metaphor of the Week
Recognizing the Message
A traveler came to a monastery to listen to the master. After a while, he spoke to one of the other students: “I have traveled far to listen to the master. But now that I hear him, I find his words quite ordinary.” The student replied: “Do not listen to his words. Listen to his message.” “And how does one do that?” “Hold on to a sentence he says. Then shake it well until all the words fall out. What remains will ignite your heart.”
