NLP Podcast 64: The Five Archetypes - Modelling with Ralf Stumpf

In this episode, Ralf Stumpf discusses the five archetypes that play an important role in his work as a modelling expert. Ralf Stumpf started with NLP in 1986 to learn modelling. Since he did not learn much about modelling in his NLP training, he spent years afterwards studying the topic on his own. He is an NLP trainer according to DVNLP and leads our NLP location in Berlin.

The Five Archetypes

About 10 years ago, Ralf Stumpf discovered a model by Bernard A. Lietaer that presents five archetypes. "I thought WOW – these archetypes perfectly describe the five modelling styles," says Ralf Stumpf. Previously, he knew that there were different modelling styles, but he found it difficult to pass on his knowledge. With the discovered archetypes, it became easier for him to teach modelling.

The five archetypes represent styles in which one can view the world:

  1. The Ruler: this archetype does not represent a style of its own but fulfills the function of coordinating the other four styles. The Ruler's task is to coordinate the other four archetypes so well that he can use and alternate all four very flexibly in the learning and teaching process.
  2. The Warrior: the basis of this archetype is the understanding that one does not have to understand everything in order to implement it – following the motto "Show and Imitate"
  3. The Magician / Scientist: Here, the path of knowledge is the focus. It is about viewing things dissociated and analytically to draw conclusions and gain new insights.
  4. The Lovers: With this archetype, entirely new channels and perspectives open up through emotional and intuitive approaches to view and analyze the world.
  5. The Great Mother: Here, the history of the world is in the foreground – the Great Mother learns and teaches through the telling and hearing of stories.

In the best case, the Ruler is able to deploy the remaining four archetypes whenever the situation demands it. The prerequisite for this is that the four archetypes are present in a balanced manner. In the complete podcast episode, Ralf Stumpf explains what happens when one or more archetypes are too strong or too weak, or when the Ruler is unable to deploy all four archetypes. Additionally, you will learn through an exercise how these five archetypes are used in modelling to both learn and teach. Enjoy!

Book Recommendation

In the podcast, Ralf Stumpf recommends the book "Mysterium Geld: Emotional Meaning and Effect of a Taboo" by Bernard A. Lietaer. This book explains, among other things, the five archetypes. Building on Carl Gustav Jung's concept of archetypes, Lietaer reveals the emotional origin of our monetary system and explains exciting connections between our monetary system and the five archetypes.
