NLP-Podcast 62: The Swish Technique
Do you know what it's like to have bad habits that you're so used to that you even compulsively engage in them? You don't really want to, but you keep doing it because you can't let go? The Swish Technique can help you!
Swish Technique
The Swish Technique is an NLP technique that allows you to resolve compulsive behavior: "A compulsive behavior is when, for example, you often go to the fridge in the evening and grab something sweet – you don't even really notice it and can't resist it very much. Before you know it, you've already eaten the sweet, even though you didn't want to," explains Stephan Landsiedel. To avoid such situations in the future, the Swish Technique is just the right thing. For the execution of the Swish Technique, you first need two concrete images that you visualize one after the other:
- Starting Image: This is an image that directly precedes the compulsive behavior, for example, the path to the fridge.
- Target Image: This image should depict you as a person in which you have mastered the behavior. It is no longer an option for you to simply go to the fridge in the evening and grab something sweet.
These two images are then linked: Initially, the starting image is large and the target image is small. In the next step, the target image slowly grows larger and then completely overlays the starting image with a Swish This step is now repeated at least seven times. After that, you can test whether the method was successful: For this, visualize the starting image and observe what happens. Visualization will be difficult if the Swish has worked. Another testing option, of course, is to test the behavior in reality. Stephan Landsiedel explains step by step in this podcast episode how to apply the Swish Technique to successfully resolve a compulsive behavior. Do you want to resolve an unwanted behavior right now?
