NLP Podcast 37: Signals of Confidence

Do you remember your first presentation in school or the first talk you gave in front of a group? Most people feel nervous and insecure during presentations because they don't know how to behave in such situations. Often, one asks oneself: "How can I come across as confident and self-assured to my audience during a presentation?" Such and similar questions are answered by Andreas Tronnier.

5 Signals of Confidence

This podcast episode addresses the first of a total of five signals of confidence that our Landsiedel trainer for Hanover describes in his book in detail. Andreas Tronnier first emphasizes how important eye contact is as the first signal of confidence. Whether in a presentation, a meeting, a talk, or a presentation – the speaker should always direct their gaze at the audience: "It's best to spread the eye contact and not keep looking at the same people in the audience," explains Andreas Tronnier. Because the more spread out the eye contact is, the more people in the audience feel addressed, acknowledged, and respected.

Respect Through Eye Contact

Signals of ConfidenceAt the beginning of a talk, it is particularly important to pay close attention to eye contact. Through eye contact, the speaker gives their audience respect and can thus capture their attention. However, for the audience to feel respected, it is also important how long the eye contact lasts: "A somewhat pleasant eye contact lasts a little longer than 1 second," explains the rhetoric teacher. If a speaker looks at a person in the audience for too long or too intensely, that person is likely to think that something is wrong and loses attention for the talk.

In the complete podcast episode, you will also learn how eye contacts differ during the first encounter between two men or two women. What do you think, how long does the first contact between a man and a woman last? The answer is revealed by Andreas Tronnier in the podcast. Enjoy listening!
