NLP-Podcast 36: Karl Nielsen in interview
Karl Nielsen – Founder of the International Association of NLP Institutes (IN)

This podcast episode includes a segment from the interview that Stephan Landsiedel conducted with Karl Nielsen. Karl Nielsen studied psychology and sociology and is the founder of the International Association of NLP Institutes (IN). In his interview with Stephan Landsiedel, Karl Nielsen shares his very personal NLP story:
Through his wife, he came across NLP and subsequently completed his NLP Practitioner in Holland. He was so inspired by NLP that he quit his job as deputy headmaster to become an NLP trainer. In 2001, he, along with several other NLP trainers, founded the International Association of NLP Institutes (IN). This established a global NLP association, and for several years now, he has been offering degree programs in psychology with a focus on NLP.
The fourth wave of NLP
Have you ever heard of the four waves of NLP? Karl Nielsen describes the four waves of NLP as a kind of timeline that NLP has gone through over the last decades:
1st wave:
The first wave starting in 1972 is about success and being better. Initially, NLP was seen as a sales or enthusiasm wave. The goal was to extract the best from psychology and sell it to people so that they could unleash their potential and bring more enthusiasm into their lives. The two co-founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, represent this wave.
2nd wave:
The second wave starting in 1989 focuses on health. During this 'health wave,' Robert Dilts began to bring more health into people's lives using NLP. An important NLP method here is state management and the simple principle: Those who are in a good mental state also feel physically good.
3rd wave:
The third wave starting in 1992 is about spirituality. During this time, Robert Dilts and Richard Bolstad began to delve deeper and view NLP on a whole new level.
4th wave:
The fourth wave starting in 2006 centers on scientific validity. At this point, Karl Nielsen comes into play: His aim is to significantly shape the fourth wave of NLP. It is about bringing NLP back into the scientific world and establishing a scientific basis for NLP methods so that NLP can take its rightful place in the world.
