Marian Zefferer is our trainer for the Austria location, an expert in the field of rhetoric and presentations, and leads our Rhetoric Seminars. He holds a Master's degree in Psychology (M. Sc.), is an NLP trainer, and has completed many further training courses in the field of rhetoric. In this episode, the topic is storytelling and the use of stories in lectures or presentations.

Why Storytelling?

Through stories, we can convey content in a symbolic, emotional and vivid manner. This way, you can more easily capture the attention and concentration of your audience and effectively engage them. For example, if you want to give a 60-minute lecture, it will be very difficult for you to keep your audience engaged with facts for 60 minutes. Storytelling lightens your presentation and maintains your audience's attention span even during long lectures or speeches.

Storytelling in Presentations

When you incorporate stories into your speech, it becomes more understandable and appears more interesting to the audience. However, many find this difficult, as the opposite is often taught in school. But how do you manage to integrate stories well into your presentations? The first step is to find a suitable story for your speech. Everyone has seen, experienced, or been told many things in their life – often we forget some stories over time and bury them in our subconscious. So focus your thoughts precisely on the topic of your presentation to retrieve experiences from your subconscious and write down all the stories that come to mind in a brainstorming session. Not all stories are suitable for a speech. In the next step it is therefore important to select the appropriate story from your brainstorming. Stories that you have personally experienced are particularly suitable, as you do not have to fear a blackout. Especially as an inexperienced speaker, this type of story is ideal.
