NLP Podcast 10: Milton Model
The Milton Model
In this lesson, the Milton Model of NLP is introduced. This model is a kind of inversion of the Meta Model. While you can specify and clarify statements with the Meta Model, the Milton Model tends to be more artistic and vague. This nonspecific language serves to trigger trance states and help the listener access their inner resources. With the help of this Language Patterns of the Milton Model you can conduct a nice relaxation trance. However, you can also use the Milton Model in business contexts, e.g., in presentations, to put the audience into pleasant emotional states or in sales conversations to create positive associations with your own products.
Differences between the Milton Model and the Meta Model
- The Milton Model is, in linguistic terms, the exact inversion of the Meta Model. While we train specific language with the Meta Model, the Milton Model provides guidance for nonspecific language use. The indefinite expressions that we question with the help of the Meta Model, namely deletions, generalizations, and distortions, are precisely the language forms that we deliberately use in the Milton Model.
- The goal of applying the Meta Model is to gather precise and specific information (moving from the surface structure to the deep structure of language and experience). This allows lost information and experiences to be 'rediscovered.' That is, it is primarily about processes of becoming aware.
- Quite differently in the Milton Model. It provides us with diverse possibilities to form sentences full of deletions, distortions, and generalizations. The listener finds the missing information within themselves and thus develops their own meaning for what they have heard.
- The use of nonspecific language forms aims to induce and maintain a trance state, thereby connecting the other person with their hidden, unconscious resources of their personality.
- Summary: Both approaches ultimately share the goal of making 'forgotten' or 'unconscious' experiences and resources accessible again. However, the path to this is opposite.
This podcast offers, in addition to the theoretical foundations of the Milton Model, a sample trance for relaxation. Enjoy listening!
