Both/And Thinking
Definition
The And-Attitude in NLP describes an integrative way of thinking, which acknowledges the value and function of every behavior or perspective instead of polarizing between "right" and "wrong". Instead of an Or-Attitude, which weighs alternatives against each other, the And-Attitude strives to connect apparent opposites and utilize their respective strengths. Every behavior is considered useful in a specific context . This attitude promotes flexibility, self-acceptance, and holistic thinking.
Example
- A client criticizes himself for being too cautious. Through the And-Attitude, he recognizes that caution also protects him – and learns to combine it flexibly with courage.
- In inner conflicts (e.g., between the need for calm and the drive for performance), both sides are acknowledged and brought together into an integrated solution .
Origin and Theoretical Background
The And-Attitude is based on a central Basic assumption of NLP: Every behavior has a positive intention or function in a specific context. This principle is closely related to the Reframing and Parts Work, where seemingly contradictory aspects of a person are integrated. Gregory Bateson composure Milton Erickson influenced this perspective through their systemic thinking – they saw behavior as part of complex systems in which opposites can work complementarily. Thus, the And-Attitude represents systemic and integrative thinking, which prioritizes wholeness over separation.
Application Examples
- Reframing: A behavior that initially seems obstructive (e.g., perfectionism) is viewed in context and utilized as a resource (e.g., accuracy, quality awareness).
- Conflict resolution: Two opposing inner parts – e.g., "I want to relax" vs. "I must perform" – are both valued to enable a harmonious integration.
- Personal Development: Instead of fighting weaknesses, their positive core is recognized. This creates a flexible, resource-oriented approach to oneself.
Areas of Application
- Therapy: Resolution of inner contradictions and integration of personality parts.
- Coaching: Development of thinking and action spaces through flexible perspectives.
- Communication: Promotion of understanding and appreciation for different viewpoints.
- Personal Development: Expansion of choices through recognition of the entire inner system.
Methods and Exercises
- Reframing:
Analyze a behavior perceived as negative and identify its positive benefit. Develop strategies for how you can consciously and context-dependently use this behavior. - Parts work:
Identify two inner parts with different goals. Find ways for both to collaborate to fulfill a common intention. - Polarization exercise:
Write down opposing traits (e.g., discipline vs. spontaneity) and examine in which contexts each of these traits is useful. The goal is to flexibly integrate both poles.
Synonyms or Related Terms
- Integrative thinking
- Polar thinking
- Resource focus
Distinction
In contrast to the Or-Attitude, which demands decisions between alternatives, strives for And-Attitude integration: It connects differences to create holistic solutions. Instead of "either-or," the guiding question is: "How can both have their place?"
Scientific or Practical Benefit
- Individually: Promotes self-acceptance, balance, and mental flexibility.
- Practically: Supports decision-making processes by transforming apparent contradictions into resources.
- Scientifically: Anchored in systemic thinking and in the theory of positive intention of behavior in NLP.
Criticism or Limitations
- Complexity: The integration of contradictory aspects requires mindfulness, time, and practice.
- Misunderstandings: The And-Attitude can be mistakenly interpreted as relativizing problematic behaviors.

Metaphor or Analogy
The And-Attitude is like a mixing console:
Instead of just turning one knob up and muting the other, you learn to finely tune both. This creates harmony – not through exclusion, but through the conscious interplay of all tones.
