Dreamer / Visionary / Idea Generator (Dreamer)
Definition
Der Dreamer is one of the three main roles in the Walt Disney Creativity Strategy. In this state, the development of new ideas, visions, and goals is in the foreground – free from any evaluation or restriction by logic, feasibility, or criticism. The Dreamer uses their imagination to unleash boundless creativity and create visions that serve as the foundation for the subsequent phases (Realist and Critic).
Example
A team is working on the development of a new product. In the Dreamer phase , all ideas are collected – regardless of whether they seem realistic or not. This open collection forms the starting point for later implementation and evaluation phases.
Origin and Theoretical Background
The Walt Disney Strategy was developed by Robert Dilts developed, which modeled the thought processes of Walt Disney . Disney used three consecutive thinking positions – Dreamer, Realist composure Critic – to develop, specify, and test creative ideas. The Dreamer represents the phase of unrestricted creativity, where visions emerge without feasibility or criticism playing a role.
Application Examples

- In personal development: Fostering the ability to design visions for one's own life and visualize a desirable future.
- In teamwork: In a creative session, all team members consciously take on the role of the Dreamer to develop ideas without criticism.

Scientific or Practical Benefit
- Individually: Promotes creativity, inspiration, and access to inner visions.
- Practically: Supports the development of innovative ideas and strategies – especially in group processes.
- Scientifically: Based on psychological models of creativity and divergent thinking processes.
Criticism or Limitations
- Detachment from reality: Ideas from the Dreamer phase must be reviewed and specified by the Realist and Critic roles.
- Misunderstandings in the team: Without clear role separation, the creative process can become inefficient or chaotic.

Metaphor or Analogy
The dreamer is like an artist with a blank canvas:
He paints without limitations, follows his inspiration, and creates images of a possible future. It's not about how the world is, but how it could be – free, colorful, and limitless.
