The face of a twenty-year-old is created by nature, the face of a thirty-year-old by life, but at fifty, one has the face that one deserves.

Time-Line (1): Timelines

Thoughts on Time
We experience time as a subjective dimension in our lives. The older we get, the faster time seems to pass. In critical situations, time seems to stand still, the seconds drag by painfully slowly. In contrast, the highlights of our lives pass by in a flash. How do we measure time? What does time even mean? How much is a day of life worth to you?

Basic Idea of the Time-Line
How is time represented in our brain? How do we manage to encode memories in some way temporally, so that we immediately know which of two different memories is earlier and which is later? How does our brain differentiate between the future and the past? The basic hypothesis of timeline work is that our brain spatializes temporal differences. This has been empirically confirmed in many people. The discovery of the timeline enables us to make a large number of changes in a very short time.

Find Your Timeline: Quick Visualization
Ask yourself: If the past were a point in space, where would it be for you? If the future were a point in space, where would it be? Once you have found the direction of the past and the future, connect both. Where is the present? Does the line go through you (in time) or does it run outside of you (through time, out of time)? Just rely on your feelings. There is no right or wrong.

In-Time and Out of Time
The in-time type lives in his experiences. He tends to be trapped in the moment. Delays and tardiness do not bother him much. He is spontaneous and can simply be there. The out of time type often plans his entire life in advance. These people know exactly what they want and experience time as ordered, linear, and sequential. They like to work with planners and systems.

Just lean back for a moment and imagine leaving your body behind you and mentally traveling along your timeline into your future. See below you how you experience the next days, weeks, months, and years. Stop here and there to look at some details and then continue your journey... Do you like what you see? Or is your life going in the wrong direction? And then come back from your first little excursion on the timeline.

Next time, we will deal with deeper techniques on the timeline.

Metaphor of the Week

The Basket of the Old Man
Once upon a time, there was an orphan boy. He wandered from village to village, always searching for something to eat and a roof over his head. One day, the boy met an old man who was also wandering from village to village. They decided to continue together. The old man carried a large, covered wicker basket that was apparently very heavy, as he walked hunched over and occasionally groaned under the load. When they rested by a stream, the old man wearily set his basket down on the ground. The boy asked, "Shall I carry your basket for you?"
"No," replied the old man, "you cannot carry the basket for me. I must carry it all by myself."

"What is in the basket?" asked the boy, but he received no answer. They traveled together for many days. At night, when the old man thought the boy was asleep, he rummaged through his basket and spoke softly to himself.

The day came when the old man could go no further. He lay down to die. And he said to the boy, "You wanted to know what is in my basket, didn't you? In this basket are all the things I believed about myself that were not true. They are the stones that made my journey difficult. On my back, I have carried the weight of every pebble of doubt, every grain of sand of uncertainty, and every millstone of wrong paths that I have collected throughout my life. But alas - without them, I could have come so much further in life. Instead of realizing my dreams, I have only arrived here." And he closed his eyes and died.

The boy went to the basket and lifted the lid. The basket that had weighed down the old man for so long was empty.
