Trance Ratification / Confirmation or Feedback during a Trance State (Trance Ratification)

Definition

Trance ratification / confirmation or feedback during a trance state in NLP

The Trance ratification refers to a Feedback process during a trance, where the hypnotherapist or coach provides the client with feedback on signs of the trance state. By confirming perceived changes – such as in breathing, posture, or facial expression – the trance state is made conscious, stabilized, and deepened. This process strengthens the client's trust in their own perception and facilitates access to unconscious processes.

Example

A hypnotherapist notices a change in the client's breathing and says: “As you go deeper into the trance, you may notice how calm and relaxed your breath has become.”

Origin and Theoretical Background

The concept of trance ratification goes back to Milton H. Erickson who emphasized the importance of feedback and awareness for deepening trance. Erickson viewed ratification as an integral part of the hypnotic process – it helps the client recognize that the trance is "already happening." In the NLP this approach was adopted and expanded: Ratification is understood there as a method to promote the self-perception and self-regulation of the client.

Application Examples

  • In Therapy: The therapist observes how the client's facial muscles relax and says: “You may feel how your face becomes softer and calmer.”
  • In Coaching: While the client is in trance, the coach comments: “You can feel how light your body becomes now as you explore new possibilities.”
  • In self-hypnosis: A person tells themselves: “I notice how I relax deeper with each breath.”

Areas of Application

  • Therapy: Deepening the trance and supporting the therapeutic process.
  • Coaching: Promoting the client's trust and self-perception.
  • Communication: Building rapport through mindful feedback.
  • Personal Development: Making conscious and reinforcing positive inner states.

Methods and Exercises

  1. Observation of physiological changes: Pay attention to signs such as slower breathing, changed muscle tension, or eye movements. Provide this feedback neutrally, e.g.: “As you become calmer, you may notice how evenly your breath flows.”
  2. Language patterns for reinforcement: Use typical hypnotic formulations such as: “As you go deeper into the trance, you may notice…" or “And the more you notice this, the more pleasant it can become.”
  3. Indirect confirmation through metaphors: Use vivid language to deepen trance, e.g.: “Sometimes deep relaxation feels like floating on a gentle wave.”

Synonyms or Related Terms

  • Feedback in trance
  • Trance confirmation
  • Feedback during hypnosis

Distinction

The Trance ratification differs from the Trance induction by not serving the induction of the trance state, but rather its confirmation and deepening. It can be used during any phase of hypnotic work to stabilize the inner experience.

Scientific or Practical Benefit

  • Individually: Supports clients in consciously experiencing and deepening the trance state.
  • Practically: Increases the effectiveness of trance techniques through feedback and trust.
  • Scientifically: Corresponds to the principle of integrating feedback loops in communication theory and is supported by findings from hypnosis research.

Criticism or Limitations

  • Subjectivity: The interpretation of trance signs is individual and can be prone to errors.
  • Overloading: Too frequent or inappropriate feedback can disrupt the trance instead of deepening it.

Metaphor or Analogy

Trance ratification is like a quiet nod:

It confirms to the client: "You are on the right track." This subtle sign strengthens trust, deepens the experience, and opens the space for unconscious processes – like a gentle echo that amplifies the sound of the inner journey.
