Star Step Anchoring Technique
Definition
The Star Step Anchor Technique is a NLP method, in which positive states are anchored spatially in the room. A central problem is positioned at a fixed point – the problem anchor – while several resource points are arranged in a circular manner around it. The name is derived from the star step in basketball: One foot remains firmly on the ground (problem anchor), while the other – the “resource leg” – moves in a circle to activate various resource points one after the other. The goal is to transform the problem by gradually incorporating and 'stacking' resources.
Origins and Theoretical Background
The technique was developed by Gerd Felber as an advancement of the ground anchor . It combines physical movement with mental resource work, to make changes tangible. Inspired by the star step in basketball, the method utilizes the principle of spatial anchoring, to activate and integrate emotional states. It is based on the fundamental assumptions of embodiment – the close connection between posture, movement, and mental processing.
Application Examples
- Stress Management Resources such as calmness, energy and focus are centred around the stress anchor and activated one after the other.
- Fear Resolution: A student with exam anxiety anchors positive states such as courage, calmness, and self-confidence to neutralize the fear.
- Conflict Management: A person activates different perspectives or solution strategies and integrates them physically through the star step process.
Areas of Application
- Therapy: Support in working with fears, blockages, or negative patterns.
- Coaching: Activation of resources in personal or professional challenges.
- Personal Development: Promotion of resilience, flexibility, and self-efficacy.
- Leadership Training: Development of decision-making and problem-solving skills through physically anchored resource work.
Methods and Exercises
- Setting problem anchors: The central problem is defined and anchored at a fixed point (e.g., marked on the ground).
- Establishing resource anchors: Four to six positive resources (e.g., courage, calmness, creativity, trust) are arranged at points in a circle around the problem anchor.
- Adopting a meta-position: The client visualizes a line connecting all resource points and chooses a direction of movement (clockwise or counterclockwise).
- Performing the star step: The client stands with one foot (problem foot) on the problem anchor and places the other leg (resource foot) one after the other on the resource points. With each step, the corresponding positive state is consciously activated and anchored.
- Transformation: The problem leg is finally placed next to the resource leg – symbolically representing the integration of resources into the problem.
- Walk and integration: The client walks in a circle with both legs over the resource points to 'stack' the positive states and solidify the new overall experience.

Scientific or Practical Benefit
- Practical benefits: The star step anchor technique promotes the integration of positive states through physical movement, strengthens the focus on solutions instead of problems and facilitates the transformation of burdensome emotions into constructive energy.
- Scientific benefits: The method utilizes the principle of embodiment, which emphasizes the connection between body movement and mental processing. Studies show that physical activity, symbolic movement, and spatial arrangement emotional learning and change processes can support.
Criticism or Limitations
- Space and movement needs: The method requires sufficient physical space and openness for movement.
- Symbolic nature: Success depends on the client's willingness to engage in symbolic and imaginative processes.

Metaphor or Analogy
The dance of transformation
The star step anchor technique is like a dance: One foot remains firmly rooted in the problem – it symbolizes stability and awareness. The other foot moves freely and seeks a new resource with each step, like a dancer exploring different tones of a melody. In the end, the movements merge into a harmonious rhythm – the problem becomes part of the dance and transforms into strength and lightness.
