Install (Installation)
Definition
In NLP, it refers to Install the process through which new, desired behaviors, beliefs, or strategies are integrated into a person's personal experience and behavior. The goal is the permanent anchoring of these changes in thinking and acting, so that they become automatically and unconsciously retrievable.
Origin and Theoretical Background
The concept has its origins in learning psychology and cognitive behavioral research. Richard Bandler and John Grinder developed techniques for the effective implementation of positive changes in the subconscious. It is based on principles of neuroplasticity – the brain's ability to reorganize itself through experience – and the conscious use of mental resources to create new neural pathways.
Application Examples
-
In Coaching:
A client wants more self-confidence in professional situations.
Intervention: Through the technique of Future Pacing, the desired self-assured behavior is mentally anchored in future, relevant situations.
-
In Therapy:
A client suffers from negative beliefs such as "I am not lovable."
Intervention: New, resource-rich beliefs (e.g. "I am valuable") are installed through repeated suggestions and visualizations.
Areas of Application
- Therapy: Installation of positive beliefs to overcome limiting thought patterns.
- Coaching: Anchoring of goal images and new competencies for sustainable motivation.
- Companies: Implementation of new thinking strategies for better performance and creativity.
- Sports Psychology: Development of mental routines to increase concentration and performance.
- Personal Development: Building new, desired behavioral patterns for a more fulfilling life.
Methods and Exercises
-
Setting anchors:
By repeatedly linking a desired response (state) with a specific stimulus (anchor), behavior is automated.
-
Mental rehearsal techniques:
Intensive, detailed visualization of specific action sequences to strengthen neural connections (mental practice).
-
Submodalities adjustment:
Changing the inner images, sounds, and sensations to optimize the emotional coding of the new strategy.
Synonyms or Related Terms
- Imprinting
- Anchoring
- Implementing
Distinction
In contrast to learning (which often occurs consciously and over a longer period), installing aims for a quick and targeted integration of the desired pattern at an unconscious level, often utilizing trance or strong emotional states.
Scientific or Practical Benefit
-
Individually:
- Promoting self-confidence and motivation.
- Improving personal performance through automated, positive responses.
-
Practically:
- Increasing efficiency through targeted mental programming.
- Application in coaching and therapy for the rapid anchoring of new patterns.
The effectiveness is based on psychological findings that demonstrate that repeated mental exercises and targeted emotional states can lead to stronger connections of neural networks and can sustainably influence behavior.
Criticism or Limitations
-
Scientific validation:
The effectiveness of many NLP techniques, especially in the isolated context of "installing," is primarily anecdotal and there is a lack of comprehensive scientific studies that fully validate the process.
-
Misunderstandings:
Installing does not mean that changes remain permanent immediately and without further application. Regular reinforcement of the new pattern (through practice) is necessary for sustainability.
Metaphor or Analogy
Imagine you are installing new software on your computer. At first, you have to set it up and test it, but over time it runs automatically in the background and supports you in your tasks – this is how installing new ways of thinking and behaving works.
