Presuppositions of NLP

In NLP, several useful presuppositions have been formulated. These are not objective facts, but they make communication with others and life itself easier.

NLP Presuppositions

  1. The map is not the territory.
We all have different ideas of the world. None of these representations shows the world completely or accurately. People respond to their map of reality, not to reality itself.

  2. In communication, there are no mistakes, only feedback we can learn from.
Every reaction and every result can be used as feedback and as an opportunity to learn. As feedback, they provide important clues as to whether a solution path is suitable or not and invite us to seek new approaches.

  3. There are no right or wrong models of the world.
Everyone sees the world through their own lens.
  4. People already have all the resources they need for any desired change.
The goal of NLP is to make these resources available at the right time and use them in the best possible way.

  5. People always make the best possible choice available to them within their model of the world.
If people had other and more appropriate options for meeting their needs, they would not do many of the things that sometimes seem to happen out of pure malice.
  6. Behind every behavior or symptom, no matter how problematic, there is a positive intention.
Every behavior serves a positive function in the person’s life, regardless of possible negative side effects.

  7. For every behavior there is a context in which it can be useful or appropriate.
What is learned is learned — this behavior once led to a desired success. The goal is to develop more choices in addition to this behavior.

  8. Resistance from a client means a lack of flexibility on the part of the consultant.
Resistance does not arise from the other person’s ill will, but indicates a lack of rapport, which can be resolved by (re)establishing rapport.

  9. The meaning of communication is the response you get.
We communicate to elicit a desired response from others. If this response does not occur, our message has not been received. Instead of reacting negatively, it makes sense to change our own behavior.

  10. If something doesn’t work, do something else.
If we are flexible, we can view every reaction as a result and therefore as valuable information.

Video on NLP Presuppositions

What presuppositions exist in NLP? In this video, Stephan Landsiedel, NLP trainer and coach from Kitzingen, talks about statements that are taken for granted or refuted under various assumptions. At the same time, it is emphasized that there is something positive behind every intention, no matter what it may be.
