Changing a Belief

A strategy for letting go of limiting beliefs and adopting new, empowering ones.


  1. Person A identifies a belief about themselves they don’t like—something that limits their behavioral flexibility and choice. A does not share the belief’s content with B and C.
  2. Person B elicits the submodalities of the strong, unwanted belief.
  3. A then identifies a neutral situation where all options are acceptable—for example: “I could have fish and chips for dinner, or maybe I’ll find something else on the menu that looks better. It doesn’t really matter what I choose.” This is the belief we call the “wishy-washy” belief.
  4. B elicits the submodalities of this wishy-washy belief.
  5. B then guides A through the submodalities of the unwanted belief, changing one at a time into those of the wishy-washy belief. Identify which change makes the biggest difference. Make sure to return each submodality to its original form before moving on to the next.
  6. A then identifies a belief they would like to have—one that would be more useful than the old one. This new belief should be framed positively and viewed as a process rather than a goal. Conduct an ecology check: “If I held this belief, how would it affect others? My work? Does it align with my values and those of people close to me?” Modify the belief as needed to meet these conditions.
  7. Convert the new belief into the submodalities of the wishy-washy belief.
  8. Then B (using notes from step 5) instructs A how to weaken the old belief and transform it into a wishy-washy version. For example, if the most significant change in step 5 was distance, B instructs A to move the old belief further away, then bring it back to the same distance as the wishy-washy one.
  9. Let the new belief (images and sounds) snap into the configuration of the old belief.
  10. Test and do a Future Pace. B asks A what they now believe about themselves. If A now holds this new belief, what will they do differently than before? A runs through a sequence of the new behavior.
