The Swish Technique
The Swish Technique helps you break unwanted habits and build strong positive motivation.
In the standard Swish, the submodalities of size, brightness, and distance are used. This works very well in many cases.
Simply put:
- The desired image becomes larger, brighter, and moves closer.
- The unwanted image becomes smaller, darker, and moves farther away.
In the Design Swish, the critical submodalities (the driver submodality) are used instead of size, brightness, and distance. The trigger image is elegantly transformed into the desired image using the driver submodality.
Standard Swish
- Topic/Context:
Find an unwanted behavior or reaction. - Trigger Image:
Associated. What happens right before the unwanted behavior? There should be a slightly unpleasant feeling connected to it. - Create a Desired Image:
Dissociated. What could someone see from the outside that shows you are a person for whom this situation is no longer a problem — someone who has the qualities and resources to respond in the desired way? The image should feel highly attractive. - Swish:
Now perform the Swish with both images. Start by seeing the trigger image large and bright. Place a small, dark version of the desired image in the lower right corner. The small dark image grows larger and covers the first image completely, which fades and shrinks just as quickly — as fast as you can say “Swish.” - Repeat the Swish at least seven times.
- Test:
Now imagine the original trigger image — what happens? If the Swish worked, it will be difficult to bring up the old image. Another way to test is to try it in real life and observe your response.
