Collapsing Anchors
With this NLP technique, negative anchors can be effectively neutralized. It requires a strong positive anchor, which is triggered simultaneously with the negative one to dissolve its impact.
Classic Collapsing Anchors Technique
-
Negative Anchor
Guide your client into a state that feels unpleasant or inappropriate. When they are fully immersed in it, anchor the state by touching their knee, knuckle, or another neutral spot. -
Separator
Separate your client by asking neutral questions that shift their state (e.g., “Where did you go on your last vacation?”). -
Test
Re-trigger the negative anchor to ensure it works. If not, repeat step 1. If it does, continue to step 4. -
Positive Anchor
Lead your client into a powerful, positive state they would prefer to feel in that earlier situation. Anchor this feeling on the opposite knee or knuckle. -
Separator
Separate the client again, ideally using different neutral questions. -
Test
Test the positive anchor. Notice subtle physiological shifts your client can’t consciously control. If the anchor isn’t strong enough or requires mental effort to reactivate, repeat step 4 to strengthen it. -
Collapse the Anchors
Hold the positive anchor and then trigger the negative one simultaneously. Use the hypnotic language script (below). Wait until the client’s body relaxes and symmetry returns. If the positive anchor wasn’t strong enough, return to step 4 and add another resource anchor. -
Test the Integration
Ask the client to think of the previous challenging situation and observe their response. If any remaining signs of problem physiology appear, repeat from step 4. Otherwise, guide the client through a Future Pace—imagining a similar situation in the future while maintaining the new state.

Trigger and Hold the Negative Anchor
Begin to recall what you saw and heard in that negative situation, while continuing to stay in this pleasant feeling... and with these new, changed sensations, you may find yourself perceiving that situation differently — noticing new aspects or meanings you hadn’t recognized before... isn’t that right? And as the significance of that old situation shifts for you...
Release the Negative Anchor
You can begin to explore new, more resourceful ways of responding... can’t you?
